The Spinet (Reproduction)

While studying art in college, one of my assignments was to pick out an old masters painting and reproduce it. I chose this one by Thomas Wilmer Dewing. I loved his use of colors which reminded me of the fall. Also I saw a-lot of depth and richness to his style of painting. I was intrigued by the story I saw in this painting. At first glance you just see a lady playing the piano. But if you look closer, she has her eyes on the mirror looking at the man reading a paper behind her and a woman looking over his shoulder. I’m curious what dynamics are sizzling under the surface. Is she being a good daughter and performing on the piano forte as is expected of her? Who are the people reflected in the mirror? They seem more interested in the newspaper than the music she is playing.
